All mechanics in a vehicle need a special lubricant for their proper functioning. The brake system also needs a proper fluid for correct function. Of course, the diversity is extremely wide, so each model is labeled with its own distinctive sign. Let's learn a little bit about these features.
What are the types of brake fluids?
Generally, it is accepted the types to be identified by DOT (Department Of Transportation) standard. The selection of the liquid is determined exactly by the DOT. The numbers after the abbreviation denote the class of acceptability.
- DOT 3 – it is glycolic based with a boiling point of 2200 C;
- 4 – it is glycolic based with anti-corrosion and lubricant additives;
- 4,5 - version of 4, but with even greater boiling point of 2600 C;
- 5 – it is silicone based with 280 degrees Celsius;
- 5,1 – it is an improvement of 4.5 with working temperature of 2700 C.
Upon choosing you must be guided by the recommendations of the manufacturer.
How do you change the fluid and how often?
Over time, under the influence of various changes, the water concentration in the fluid increases. This leads to losses of useful qualities in the fluid. Experiments show that within one year the water in the lubricant, that comes from the air, increases by 2-3%. In turn, this lesds to a reduction in the boiling point of 30-50 degrees Celsius.
The car manufacturers highly recommend to change the oil at least every two years. There are already special testers offered on the market, thanks to which you can check various important values of the vehicle.
As far as the change of the oil goes, the procedure can be performed by yourself, but in a car service it will be twice as fast. Still, there are people who love to take care of their favorite vehicle by themselves. First, the car needs to be put on a special bridge from where you get access to the bottom. Second, you should be familiar with the location of the brake cylinders, from where the oil must be drained. The amount may range from 0.75 to 1.5 l, so a large tube of mineral water cut in the middle would do the trick. Then, run out the old fluid, pour in the new one and finally, air vent the system.
