To serve you long and well the car xenons should receive proper supply. For this purpose a special block (ballast) that converts the voltage from the alternator was developed so that the lighting receives the necessary indicators. In this article it will be discussed in more details what are the ballasts used for, what are the different types and where to buy them.

What are ballasts used for?

Xenon lighting often has the so-called power supply in which kit there are thick cables. Its main task is to form a high-voltage impulse of 25-30 kV from the power supply network of the car, which ignites the gas inside the bulb of the lamp. Without the presence of such block, the usual system of the vehicle with a constant voltage of 24 or 12V can not provide the lamp’s operation.

Different types of ballasts

Different ignition blocks are divided into generations. First, there was a very high percentage of obsolescent items with low reliability. The mistakes in technology were removed. In the second generation the obsolescent items decreased in number, but reliability did not improve very much. Currently, nobody uses the devices from these first two generations.

In the third generation there has been more serious work on the mistakes of the previous two and now it is much more reliable. This significantly increases the stability of combustion. But the increased inrush current causes a problem in the burning of bulbs, making systems not very durable.

The fourth sequence consists of two components. The first is to support combustion, and the second - for ignition. This approach solves most of the problems. Little by little they were collected in one body without loss in performance.

In the fifth generation there are almost none obsolescent goods (no more than one per cent). But the most important change - the use of the processor for computing the optimal work of the system. One processor replaces multiple components, which allows to significantly reduce the size of devices. The new technology can achieve optimum power supplement, significantly extending the lamp’s life and ensuring high level of reliability.
